Statement of Purpose From the early days of my life, I set goals beyond those of my peers. I did my bachelors in one of the top public schools in Afghanistan and graduated with a remarkable GPA. I was interested in both managing and teaching at the academic institutions. In order to use my time effectively and pursue my ambition, I decided to get a diploma in business administration while doing my bachelor’s and to enhance my understanding of management. After getting my bachelor’s degree, I decided to challenge myself and pursue a master’s degree in applied linguistics in the U.S. Therefore, I applied to get a Fulbright scholarship which is the most elite scholarships in the world. A total of 4000 participants applied from all over the Afghanistan in 2011. It seemed almost impossible to get the scholarship among thousands of participants; after several interviews, TOEFL tests and GRE, they have selected only the top 40 students and I was one of them. I came to the U.S. in 2012 to get my master’s degree in applied linguistics from Old Dominion University. As a Fulbright scholar, the faculty’s expectations were different from me. I was expected to do great in every course that I enrolled. Meanwhile, I was interested in research and statistics aspects of my degree, therefore, I took a Research Methods class which taught me how to do research and analyze data in advanced ways such as using SPSS. Speech is arguably the primary source of communication for humanity, enabling us to experience and share life with one other through our words. However, we see a different path of life in Janie, the main character in the book Their Eyes Were Watching God. Janie’s character evolves with using control of silence to her benefit, helping her find what she has always struggled to have: Individuality and independence. The relationships Janie has with her three husbands revolve around three versions of silence, while in pursuit of what she calls her â€Å"pear tree†, her true love. Logan forces silence from Janie which becomes an oppressor; Joe exploits Janie’s silence and uses it as a manipulator; and Janie’s only true love, Tea Cake, allows Janie†¦show more content†¦He believes that by being the oppressor, he is fulfilling his duties as the husband. â€Å"You ain’t got no particular place. While she contemplates this decision, Logan commands she help with the manure pile, but she refuses to do so. Logan then declares: â€Å"Ah’m too honest and hard-workin’ for anybody in yo’ family, dat’s de reason you don’t want me!†(Pg.32) She is appalled at what she hears and finally comes to a breaking point. He continually degrades her by relentlessly reminding her of her up bringing, arguing that she is trying to bring him down to her low standards. Janie realizes she has endured Logan’s degrading remarks and disrespect for long enough. She refuses to follow the path of her mother and grandmother who were repeatedly abused. Janie knows that she will never love Logan; he will not fit as her pear-tree. The next morning, she deserts her miserabl e marriage with Logan and continues down the road to a new adventure, where Joe Starks awaits. Is it reasonable for voters to look at personality and character traits as a basis for judging candidates for public office? Elections place voters in an important decision making process. Whether it is a local election that is only community wide or a national election that could change the country, citizens must find a way to decide which candidate to vote for. Even for children under the age of 18 elections bring about a good way to learn about politics and the people and problems that affect the government. They need to learn what has shaped others’ political opinions and should also look into campaign contributions to find out where the candidates get the funds to finance their campaigns. Whether they use their own money or raise funds from a few wealthy donors, from many small contributors or from Political Action Committees. Voters should also take a look at polls. Polls reveal who is leading at a certain point in the race. This information can be crucial for a candidate because it can increase support and contributions from people who want to be on the winning eam. There are numerous things voters must look at when deciding who to vote for in a public election. Character traits are certainly one of the most important things to look at. Judging a candidate on his or her character is one of the few things that cannot be obtained by an invalid source because voters analyze character traits themselves. However, traits are certainly not the only thing to look at. Analyzing traits is just one of the many processes voters must go through when seriously trying to pick the best candidate for the job.
